Smart appliance trial FAQ

What exactly is the technology that you’re testing?
Jemena will be testing the effectiveness of remotely activating power saving modes on smart air conditioners and pool pumps using small signal receivers that communicate via your smart meter or smart meter communication infrastructure.

How does it work?
In 2012, a new voluntary Australian Standard for air conditioners with demand response capability referred to as AS4755 was introduced. Adopted by many air conditioning manufacturers, the standard means that many new smart air conditioners come with a set of inbuilt power saving modes – running at 50% of rated capacity, 75% of rated capacity, or running the fan with the compressor off.

By installing a small signal receiver on your smart air conditioner compressor, Jemena will be able to remotely activate these inbuilt power saving modes during a Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge.  The clever thing about this is that by cycling through these modes, your power consumption and the power demand on the electricity network will be significantly reduced with minimal impact on your comfort.  While similar technology has been trialled across Victoria, NSW and Queensland with positive results, our Smart Appliance Trial will trial the latest technology.

Likewise, if you have a pool pump, Jemena will also install smart signal receivers on your filtration pump to reduce, during a challenge, your power consumption and demand on the electricity network by remotely activating filtration pump operation times.

How do I sign up?
To participate in the Smart Appliance Trial, you must first be registered with the Jemena Power Changers Program and have completed and expressed an interest to participate via the Smart Appliance Survey. Following your expression of interest, we will reach out and confirm some additional details including the make and model of your air conditioner and/or pool pump to confirm suitability for the Smart Appliance Trial. If all goes well we will send through some Supplementary Terms and Conditions and following your acceptance, we will arrange a time with you for our qualified electrician to come to your home to install the smart devices.

How often will you control my air conditioner/pool pump?
Our technology will only remotely activate your appliance during a Power Changers Challenge  and Smart Appliance Challenge (provided that you haven’t opted-out of the Smart Appliance Challenge).  You will be notified 48 hours in advance of all Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge , and given an opportunity to opt-out (as set out below).

What challenges are available under the Smart Appliance Trial
You will be eligible to participate in the same challenges under the Power Changers program including Power Changers Challenges.

From time to time we may run additional challenges exclusively for Smart Appliance Trial participants including but not limited to 'learn and earn', 'take an action' or 'participate in a Smart Appliance Challenge'. Remember, the more challenges you complete, the more you earn.

What will happen during a Power Changers Challenge or Smart Appliance Challenge?
During a Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge, Jemena will remotely activate the power saving modes on your air conditioner or the operation times of your pool pump to reduce power consumption. Note – for the technology to work, your air conditioner and pool pump will need to be switched on.

What are the benefits of participating in this trial?
Jemena’s oversight of your air conditioner and pool pump during a Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge will give you the assurance that these devices can be operated at an efficient and optimal level, ensuring continued enjoyment, reduced energy consumption and reduced demand on the electricity grid.

As part of the Smart Appliance Trial, you will automatically earn full points for a Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge by simply participating in the challenge for its full duration.

How do I opt-out of a Power Changers Challenge or Smart Appliance Challenge?
When you receive the SMS notification 48 hours before the Power Changers Challenge and Smart Appliance Challenge, we will include instructions on how to opt-out (which may be by SMS). If you wish to opt-out follow the instructions within 24 hours of receiving the notification.

If there is issue with participating in a Power Changers Challenge or Smart Appliance Challenge outside this time or during a challenge contact our Customer support
